Orthopedic Massage for Shoulder Pain in Portland

Find out why your shoulder is struggling, treat the cause by hand, and learn how to keep it moving well.

Shoulder pain has a way of creeping into everything. Reaching for a high shelf, putting on a jacket, sleeping on that side. Maybe you’ve had it looked at, done the exercises, even had a shot. It eases for a while, then it’s back.

Here’s the thing most people haven’t been told: the shoulder is one of the most mobile joints in the body, and it depends completely on what’s around it. Your shoulder blade, your upper back, your ribcage and your neck all decide how well it moves. At Healing Journey Orthopedic Massage in Southwest Portland, Don Beatty, LMT offers massage for shoulder pain that starts by looking at all of that. He finds why your shoulder is struggling, treats the cause by hand, and teaches you the self-care exercises to keep it moving well.

Why Shoulder Pain Hangs On

Your shoulder joint sits on top of the shoulder blade, and the shoulder blade glides over your ribcage. When the muscles that control that glide are out of balance, some tight and overworked, others weak and dormant, the joint can’t track the way it’s built to. The tendons and the rotator cuff end up taking strain they were never meant to carry.

That’s why rubbing the sore spot usually only helps for a short while. The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health notes that for shoulder pain, massage tends to give short-term benefits. Don’s work is built around getting past that. Hands-on treatment matters, but so does rebalancing the muscles and posture that keep loading your shoulder, and teaching you how to hold the change.

Shoulder Problems Don Commonly Works With

Two Clients, Two Kinds of Shoulder Pain

Edward came to Don with chronic shoulder pain and, by his own admission, no faith left in massage therapists. Past sessions had been either a “feel-good” rubdown or what he called a “thumb and elbow assault,” and some left him worse. A friend finally gave him a gift certificate and threatened to book the appointment herself.

He was surprised that half of his first visit was Don interviewing him about his symptoms. Don walked him through how muscles need to work in balance, then assessed his posture and alignment. On the table, instead of a rubdown, Don had him breathe in specific ways while he stretched the muscles that were in spasm or had gone dormant. Edward went home with illustrated exercise sheets. After two months of weekly sessions, he wrote that his shoulder pain had “subsided to zero,” and more than two years later he was still virtually pain-free, using the same stretches whenever he felt it start to come back. Read Edward’s full story.

Tawnya’s situation was different. She had shoulder tendinitis, tennis elbow and carpal tunnel, and her doctor had told her she might need to change careers if she wanted her shoulder to get better. Acupuncture, braces, a chiropractor and steroid shots had all given only temporary relief. Within a couple of visits with Don, she could raise her arm all the way up. Read Tawnya’s story.

Every body is different, and your timeline may not match theirs. What their stories show is the method: assess the whole pattern, correct it, and teach you to keep it.

What a Session Looks Like

1. Conversation & assessment

Your first visit starts with a conversation about how the pain began, what movements set it off and what you've already tried. Then Don looks at how you stand and move: shoulder height, how your shoulder blades sit, the position of your head and upper back.

2. Hands-on treatment

The hands-on work focuses on releasing the overworked muscles and waking up the ones that have gone quiet, so the joint can move freely again. You'll be part of it. Don often has you breathe or move in a certain way while he works, because active participation is how the change sticks.

3. Self-care you take home

You'll leave with specific self-care exercises. The goal is a shoulder you can look after on your own, not a standing weekly appointment. There are no adjustments here, and it isn't a spa massage. It's manual therapy aimed at getting your shoulder working properly again.

When to See a Doctor First

Orthopedic massage works well alongside medical care, but some shoulder problems need a doctor’s evaluation first. If your shoulder pain followed a fall or a hard impact, you can’t lift your arm at all, you see a visible deformity or major swelling, or you have chest pain or shortness of breath along with shoulder pain, please see a physician before booking.

Don regularly works alongside doctors, physical therapists and chiropractors. If something needs a different kind of care, he’ll tell you.
