Orthopedic Massage for Back Pain in Portland

Trace the pain to its structural cause, treat it by hand, and learn to keep your back working on its own.

If you’ve had back pain for a while, you’ve probably tried a lot. Chiropractic, physical therapy, massage, maybe a pain specialist. Some of it helped for a week or two. Then the ache came back, sometimes worse.

A back problem is almost never just a back problem. Your spine sits on your pelvis, and your pelvis sits on your hips and legs. When something lower down shifts, your back absorbs it. At Healing Journey Orthopedic Massage in Southwest Portland, Don Beatty, LMT offers massage for back pain that starts with a full-body assessment. He traces the pain to its structural cause, treats it by hand, and teaches you the self-care exercises to keep your back working on its own.

Why Back Pain Keeps Coming Back

Most back pain treatment focuses on the back. That makes sense on the surface, and it can bring short-term relief. Research reviewed by the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health found that massage gives short-term improvement in low back pain, but the evidence that it lasts is weak.

Don’s view is that the relief fades because the cause was never addressed. If one side of your pelvis has shifted up or rotated, a pattern sometimes called an upslip of the ilium, the muscles of your low back have to work unevenly all day just to keep you upright. A stiff hip changes how you walk. A foot that doesn’t move well changes how your whole leg loads. Your back keeps paying for all of it. Correcting that pattern is what gives your back a real chance to settle.

Don knows this one personally. His own path into orthopedic massage started with a serious back injury that left him in chronic pain while he was already working as a massage therapist. Standard massage didn’t solve it, which is what pushed him into years of advanced structural training.

Back Problems Don Commonly Works With

Two Clients Who Had Tried Everything

Mary has been a bedside nurse for over 30 years, and she had lived with chronic back pain for a long time. As a medical professional, it frustrated her that she couldn’t figure out what was going on. She had seen chiropractors, massage therapists, physical therapists and pain doctors, and none of it gave her more than short-term relief. A final try at physical therapy made her pain worse. She found Don by searching for orthopedic massage. A couple of months in, she wrote: “I am learning the ‘why’ of my problem and how to correct it. Finally, I feel like I am getting somewhere!” Read Mary’s full story.

Diana’s back pain had a clearer trigger. Several months in a walking boot left her back and hips out of alignment, and the pain continued despite physical therapy. Don “straightened out my back, realigned my hips,” she wrote, “and helped me feel better than I had in a very long time.” Read Diana’s story.

No two backs are the same, and your progress may look different. Both stories show the same idea: find out what is actually pulling on the back, correct it, and give the person the tools to keep it that way.

What a Session Looks Like

1. Conversation & assessment

Your first visit starts with a conversation. Don wants to know how your pain started, when it's worse, and what you've already tried. Then he looks at how you stand and move, checking your pelvis, hips, spine and even your feet.

2. Hands-on treatment

The hands-on work releases the muscles that are overworked and activates the ones that have gone quiet, so your pelvis and spine can move the way they should. You'll be involved, often breathing or moving in specific ways while Don works.

3. Self-care you take home

Before you leave, you'll get specific self-care exercises. Don's goal is for you to maintain your back on your own, not to need a weekly appointment indefinitely. There are no spinal adjustments here, and it isn't a spa massage either. It's manual therapy aimed at getting your body working properly again.

When to See a Doctor First

Orthopedic massage works well alongside medical care, but some back symptoms need a doctor right away. If your back pain followed a fall or accident, or comes with numbness in the groin or inner thighs, new trouble controlling your bladder or bowels, leg weakness that’s getting worse, fever, or unexplained weight loss, please see a physician before booking.

Don works alongside doctors, physical therapists and chiropractors regularly. If your situation needs a different kind of care, he’ll tell you directly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Massage on its own tends to give short-term relief for back pain. Don combines hands-on work with a full-body assessment and corrective exercises, aiming at the structural pattern that keeps bringing the pain back.

Yes. Don doesn’t do spinal adjustments, and he doesn’t build care around a recurring weekly visit. He uses manual therapy and muscle rebalancing, then teaches you exercises so you can maintain the results yourself.

Because your spine sits on your pelvis, and your pelvis sits on your legs. A shifted pelvis or a stiff hip can force your back muscles to work unevenly all day. Fixing that is often what lets the back calm down.

It depends on how long the pattern has been building. Mary noticed real progress within a couple of months. Don will give you a realistic picture after your first assessment.
